Corporate Finance Series: Economics: Concepts, Applications, and Emerging Topics and Developments (in collaboration with FICPA)

Learning Objectives

  • • Understand traditional, key and evolving economic, finance and related terms and concepts.
    • Relate to world geo-political developments, economic events, and market (equity, capital, currency, energy and commodities) dynamics -- in economic and financial terms or contexts.
    • Take-away an understanding of various critical issues and opportunities.

Major Topics

• Differentiating key Micro-economic vs. Macro-economic concepts.
• Dominated by the profound economic and business ‘ripple effects’ of the Iran-US war, we will explore the critical “dual-chokepoint” shipping crisis involving the Strait of Hormuz. This resulted in ‘disrupting’ 20% of global petroleum flow, and 30% of global helium supplies, vital for semiconductor production, and leading to shortages and impacting for example, the AI and Tech, aerospace, medical imaging and other industries.
• Exploring how the resulting energy price shocks have driven U.S. gas prices to four-year highs, impacting the pricing of goods and services in the ‘inflation-transmission-chain’, pressuring Central Banks to carefully consider any interest rate changes, and forcing the International Monetary Fund to downgrade it’s early second quarter 2026 global growth forecasts. As well as delving into other key global, regional, and country specific economic developments and knock-on effects.
• Beyond the conflicts, we will address long-term structural shifts, including global trade, the impact of sustained high U.S. tariffs, the emergence of a de-coupling or fragmented world geo-economic order, the outlook for resource-rich economies, the situation of the U.S. Dollar, public finance, and other factors.
• An overview of other key factors related to the US economy, and of selected equity, capital and commodities markets.
• An overview of key developments in Digital and Financial Technology (“FinTech”), and Digital Currencies (Crypto).
• The economics of AI.
• The booming AI and Tech investment sector -- which intersects with private credit financing -- and has been and continues to act as a global ‘shock absorber’.
