Town hall takeaways: The election's impact on tax policy

Lauren Vahey, director of Congressional and Political Affairs with the AICPA, led a conversation during the MACPA's monthly town hall meeting on Friday, Oct. 18 about how this year's election could impact the federal tax environment in 2025. If you missed the meeting, here are three key takeaways:

  1. Lame-duck activities: The lame duck session of Congress could possibly feature legislative activity related the Employee Retention Credit and targeted disaster tax relief, as well as an effort to address taxpayer and tax practitioner experiences in dealing with the IRS and the U.S. Tax Code.

  2. No matter who's president, tax reform is hard. A divided government, high costs, and the difficulty in aligning campaign promises with reality are just a few of the issues our next president will face in implementing tax reform.

  3. So many scenarios: The dynamics will change depending on which party controls the White House, the Senate, and the House. Lauren outlines many of the possibilities in her slides.

Also available in Lauren's slides are lists of potential efforts to raise revenue from both Democrats and Republicans and a closer look at the major proposals put forth by Kamala Harris and Donald Trump regarding individual, estate, business, and international taxation.
