The Maryland Association of CPAs' State Tax Committee celebrated a longstanding tradition on Dec. 12 with its annual Appreciation Luncheon, marking more than 40 years of gathering tax professionals, government representatives, and invited guests. The event, which had a brief hiatus during the COVID era, resumed with great enthusiasm at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore.

The tradition serves as a platform for committee members and guests — including representatives from the Comptroller's Office, the State Department of Assessment and Taxation, and the Maryland Division of Unemployment Insurance — to come together in a relaxed atmosphere. It's an occasion to express gratitude for cooperation and open communication within the MACPA's tax community throughout the past year.

The keynote speaker for the event was Comptroller Brooke Lierman, who opened her speech with heartfelt appreciation for the MACPA's support in advancing key initiatives. She shared insights into the three core priorities guiding her office: agency-wide improvements, creating opportunities for Maryland's communities, and positioning the state for long-term economic growth. The emphasis was on ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency, inclusivity, and economic resilience to address the evolving needs of the state.

During her address, Comptroller Lierman provided a sneak peek into the upcoming State of the Economy Report. Delving into Maryland's economic landscape, she discussed strengths, challenges, and areas of growth. The report aims to provide decision-makers with valuable context, sparking essential conversations about Maryland's future.

A significant announcement came with the introduction of the Maryland Tax Connect portal. This technological advancement is poised to streamline tax processes, offering businesses benefits like online payments, updated information, and efficient filing. Comptroller Lierman encouraged businesses to embrace this change, highlighting its role in modernizing operations and creating a more user-friendly experience.

Looking ahead, Comptroller Lierman discussed legislative proposals for a digital filing transition by 2025. She outlined the benefits, including quicker processing times, improved accuracy, and a shift toward more customer-facing work. This transition was framed as a monumental step from the mainframe to the cloud, symbolizing the office's commitment to progress.

In closing, Comptroller Lierman expressed her enthusiasm for the impactful work ahead and extended her appreciation to the MACPA tax community for their integral role in building a more equitable, resilient, and prosperous Maryland. The luncheon served not only as a celebration of partnerships but also as a preview of the exciting advancements on Maryland's tax horizon.
