It’s your story … but let a CPA do your taxes

First, a confession: I love Intuit’s new “The Year of the You” TurboTax ad.

Really, what’s not to love? It’s funny, adorable, irresistible. And pretty much every American everywhere can relate to at least one scenario put forth in the 90-second ad. I even love the sales pitch: “That’s what taxes are: a recap. The story of your year.”

Well played, Intuit.

Right up until the final 10 seconds. Right up until the part where the narrator says, “We think you’re the best person to do your taxes.”

Sorry, but in a year in which you got married, bought a house, had a baby, and / or started taking lots of business trips to Des Moines, you’d better hire a CPA to do your taxes. Those tax forms are gonna get complicated really fast.

When things get that crazy, the best person to tell that part of your story is your CPA.
