Town hall takeaways: Trends that are reshaping the world of work

Heather Sperduto, vice president of sales operations for the Accountant Channel at ADP, and Laura Jansen, ADP's vice president of Baltimore Major Accounts, led a conversation during the MACPA's monthly town hall meeting on Friday, Sept. 20 about the trends that are reshaping the world of work. If you missed the meeting, here are three key takeaways:

1. Anything can change the world of work. Are you ready for the next anything? Potential disruptors on the horizon include global conflict, election-year uncertainty, and increasing household debt. How might these trends impact your workforce? How should you address them?

2. Flexibility is still the top factor: The top four benefits that employees and job seekers want are:

  • Flexible work hours / schedule
  • The ability to work remotely full-time
  • The availability of free food on site
  • Learning and development opportunities.

Your ability to attract and retain talent might start in these areas.

3. Compliance trends raise concerns among employers: ADP personnel are hearing more questions than any others from employers in these four areas:

  • Misclassification of employees (W2 vs. 1099)
  • Failure to pay overtime
  • Managing a remote workforce
  • Keeping up with pay transparency

This presents a world of opportunity for CPAs. Seventy-eight percent of accountants say they need to move beyond traditional services to survive. Meanwhile, 62% of businesses want HR and talent insights from their accountants. CPAs are well positioned to help clients with these types of conversations.
