CPA candidates in Maryland whose conditional credits were scheduled to expire during the pandemic may now have those credits extended until June 30, 2025, thanks to recent action by the Maryland State Board of Accountancy.

Maryland’s State Board has outlined which credits are eligible for the extension by posting the following language on its website:

CPA Exam Credit Extension Information
In response to significant health, economic, education and travel disruptions resulting in CPA Exam candidate hardships — coupled with anticipated negative impacts associated with the launch of a new CPA Exam on Jan. 1, 2024 — any Maryland candidate with CPA Examination credit(s) on Jan. 30, 2020, through Dec. 31, 2023 will have such credit(s) extended to June 30, 2025.

The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy initially had suggested that individual states apply the extension to credits that expired from Jan. 30, 2020 through May 11, 2023. In an effort to avoid confusion among CPA candidates, Maryland’s board opted to apply the extension to credits that were due to expire through Dec. 31, 2023.
