Ethics in Using Artificial Intelligence for Accounting

Speaker: Brandon Schweitzer, PhD, MBA, ACUE, Collegiate Associate Professor, University of Maryland Global Campus

Ethics in using Artificial Intelligence (AI) for accounting is a complex and evolving concern. AI can significantly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of financial processes. However, it also raises significant ethical questions. One key issue revolves around transparency and accountability. AI systems, while powerful, can sometimes operate as black boxes, making it challenging to understand the rationale behind their decisions. This lack of transparency can create ethical dilemmas, particularly in cases of errors or biases in financial reporting. Data privacy and security questions are also paramount, as AI systems rely on vast amounts of sensitive financial data. Ethical considerations also encompass the potential job displacement that automation through AI may bring to the accounting profession. Addressing these ethical concerns requires a careful balance between harnessing AI's benefits and ensuring its use aligns with accounting's fairness, transparency, and accountability principles.
